Staff at Portsmouth’s Blue Reef Aquarium are celebrating the return of the ‘Great British Bake Off’ next week by launching their own fishy format of the show.
Nicknamed the ‘Great British Hake Off’, aquarists and other members of the team at the Clarence Esplanade wildlife attraction will be devising fishy-inspired cakes and bakes.
Each week a different member of the team will be subjecting their finest culinary efforts to the judgement of their peers.
Bakes will be scored out of five with the winner being decided at the end of show.
Blue Reef Aquarium’s Hannah Butt said: “Everyone here is a huge fan of the GBBO and so we decided we’d join in the fun and devise our own in-house version.
“We’re encouraging everyone to incorporate some kind of fishy theme in to their bakes and extra points will be on offer for the most inspired creations.
“I think it’s safe to say none of us are the greatest bakers but what we lack in talent we more than make up for with enthusiasm and it will be fascinating to see what people come up with,” she added.
Over the years the aquarium’s team of aquarists have created a series of frozen fish cakes to feed to their resident family of otters, however the new competition is designed to be only eaten by humans and will therefore not be featuring raw fish or squid.

At the aquarium’s heart is a giant tropical ocean tank where an underwater walkthrough tunnel offers incredibly close encounters with a huge range of exotic coral reef species.
More than 40 naturally-themed displays reveal the sheer variety of life in the deep from native sharks and rays to the cute otters and colourful reptiles and amphibians!
